About me and my work

Hi, my name is Rebeca Castellanos and I'm a ceramic artist based in Hermosillo, Sonora.

All of my pieces are made by hand either by using the coiling technique, the pottery wheel, slabs and or a combination. I like to create freely that way I know my creative subconscious mind will come out to play turning my hands into an instrument.

My work is based on nature, mostly the ocean, where I often go to appreciate the vastness and calmness of life. My pieces are all made one by one by hand. Therefore each piece is a one of a kind.

My vases, which I love making them, feel as though I’m having a long conversation with each one, wherein my hands are subconsciously bringing out their own rhythm and are guiding me in what the shape of the vase will be. I just love it!!

And lastly, my utilitarian pieces are inspired by my unique vases. It's a way to put in what I love doing in a smaller and re-creatable piece.

El torno taller de cerámica

El Torno Taller de Cerámica is the name of my studio. Before relocating back to Mexico, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for 10 years and that is where I was first introduced to the ceramics world.

When I decided to come back to Mexico, I returned knowing I wanted to start my own studio. On Wednesdays, the studio functions as an open class with regular students. The rest of the week, you'll find me working on my pieces and ongoing projects.
